New Friends!

Updated: Jun 15

In my last blog, I discussed the dreaded task of moving. Like me, you have probably moved at least once, twice, three times, or more. I have lived in several cities across the US and a few smaller, rural towns. While the physical aspect is exhausting, the emotional element is draining.

When moving into a new neighborhood, meeting people and connecting with the community can be challenging. Having moved more than 20 times, I've been in those shoes many times. It's not always easy to step out of our cocoon, but if you stretch yourself, you can build your network of friends.

As someone who has relocated multiple times, I've compiled a list of ways to get involved in a new community and meet friends. Remember, larger towns tend to offer more opportunities than rural ones. Take your time to get to know people; it's not a process you want to rush. Be cautious, and don't let your guard down too quickly; you'll want plenty of time to get to know your future friend(s). Always prioritize your safety; it's of utmost importance. If you have Jesus in your heart, allow Him to lead you in the right direction. Pray, listen, follow.

1. Get connected to a Bible-teaching church

2. Join a small group at church

3. Sign up for a Bible study

4. Get acquainted with neighbors

5. Check newspapers, postings

6. Take a class; park or WMCA

7. Join a gym; take a class

8. Teach your trade

9. Start a group of what you enjoy

10. Learn to sew, crochet, knit

11. Take up a craft or hobby

12. Go to a swimming pool

13. Take part in community activities

14. Library activities

15. Join a book club (can start at the library)

16. Host a tea party for anyone you have met

17. Host a neighborhood meet & greet

18 Volunteer (hospital, seniors, animal rescue)

19. Bible Study Fellowship (BSF)

20. Join a sports team (golf, ball, volleyball, etc.)

I hope these ideas help you to become comfortable in any new environment you encounter.

"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Matthew 18:20
